Velaa Private Island
Barefoot days, an island in your palm, and privacy on a scale you rarely find
A Turtle-Shaped Island of One's Own
Velaa was built by Czech entrepreneur Jiri Smejc, opening in December 2013 after years spent as a guest elsewhere in the Maldives left him wanting an island he couldn't otherwise book. It sits alone in Noonu Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane flight north of Male, on a stretch of sand barely a mile long. Forty-seven villas, houses and residences are built from Bornean wood and Jordanian stone, each with its own pool and lagoon access, spaced far enough apart that tropical vegetation keeps neighbours out of sight. Little separates a stay here from owning the island outright, padel included.
The Facilities
Wellness is central to life at Velaa. Two spas, one contemporary and one Ayurvedic, offer treatments in six secluded overwater villas, with doctors on site. The Snow Room, paired with a sauna, offers a distinctive cold-plunge ritual, the only one of its kind in the Maldives. Dining is just as considered: an 800-label wine cellar sits beneath a teppanyaki restaurant perched 37 feet above the island.
The Padel
Velaa’s panoramic padel courts bring the game into the island’s lush interior, with palms and tropical greenery framing every rally. Open to players of all levels, it comes with instructors on hand for private coaching. The resort has also welcomed world-class talent: former world No. 1 padel player Marta Marrero has led private lessons on the island.
